Cast of Hamilton Delivers Message to Ohio Man
|YOUNGSTOWN, OH—When Bill Workman took his wife and children to the Broadway production of Hamilton, the last thing he expected was a personal message delivered directly by the cast. Mr. Workman described the experience to our reporter.
“I wanted to go to Cedar Point, you know, for the rides, but she wanted some big city culture”, Bill said, nodding to his wife, Sue.
A part-time dental assistant and mother of three, Sue said, “People have been talking lots about Hamilton. I thought it would be something different, and the kids could learn some history.”
Mr. Workman continued, “So we get there, take our seats, and watch the play. It actually was pretty cool I have to say. I enjoyed it even though all the people around us were sort of… you know… uppity.” That is when the Workman’s experience took a bad turn. “The play ended and everyone clapped. Then this feller who was in the play stepped up and said he understood there were guests in the audience from Ohio. People just started booing all over the place, and I was thinking, ‘Well, I’m from Ohio’, you know? Next thing I know this feller gives a little speech.” Bill Workman recalled the cast member’s speech as best he could, which we’ve corroborated with videos from the event:
“Mr. Bill Workman, we thank you for attending tonight. We hope you will hear us out.”
“We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that you may not cease beating your wife. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to refrain from beating your wife from this point forward.”
“The audience was all hootin’ and a hollerin’ so I couldn’t even say nothing!” Workman exclaimed. “I never… I would never…” Sue Workman interjected, “He’s never laid a hand on me and never would. If he ever tried, I’d exercise my Second Amendment rights faster than a duck on a June bug! We felt like they were harassing us. We just wanted to see a friggin’ play. We’ll probably just go to Cedar Point next time.”
We contacted the cast member who delivered the message to the Workmans. He replied, “Conversation is not harassment. We appreciate the Workmans for listening.”
